Is that motorcycle cop, on a Buell police motorcycle? They may be, especially if Buell has anything to say about it.

Motorcycle manufacturers have always looked for business at the various law enforcement and government agencies all over the world and with good reasonpolice motorcycle - buell. The guys who use these motorcycles invarably test them to their limits, over an extended period. What better reccomendation for any motorcycle manufacturer than to have his bike ridden by the"boys in blue? Well, The new Buell Ulysses® Police XB12XP  is the new Buell police motorcycle offering, and aims to give government agencies a “special duty” patrol vehicle that is capable of travellng  over a various types of terrain, from open highways to city streets to unpaved back-country roads.

This Buell Police motorcycle is based on the versatile Buell Ulysses adventure sportbike, and  features long-travel suspension, generous ground clearance and a meaty set of  tires that should in theory allow it to tackle roads too rough or narrow for cars or even a  traditional police motorcycle. On smooth tarmac, the Buell Police motorcycle is an agile performer. It also incorporates a pillioon for a passenger. the bike will be available for order through Buell dealers as of May 27, 2008, while the production of the 2009 Ulysses Police is scheduled to begin in August 2008.

The special features of the Ulysses Police motorcycle are well, everything you would expect in a police motorcycle. Standard accessories like hard-shell top and side cases, each removable and lockable. The side cases are narrower than the standard Ulysses accessory side cases, which actually allows for more clearance in tight situations. On the Ulysses Police model, the Buell Triple Tail system functions as a luggage rack with tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, or as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails. A tall windshield, heated hand grips, and handlebar deflectors are also standard equipment.

The Ulysses Police motorcycle is powered by an air/oil/fan-cooled, fuel-injected Buell Thunderstorm 1203cc V-Twin power unit  that delivers a resectable 103 peak horsepower. However, the real beauty of this particular engine lies in its broad powerband and abundant torque, which  gives the Ulysses the capability to procgress at low  speeds over uneven  roads with less gear shifting, while still being able to deliver instant bursts of acceleration. The Ulysses Police has an EPA fuel mileage rating of 51 mpg urban/64 mpg highway*. A Goodyear Hibrex final drive belt with Flexten Plus technology is probaly the best drive belt around at the moment,  and never needs adjustment or lubrication.

The Showa front and rear suspension units are fully adjustable. Rear spring preload can be adjusted for passenger and gear weight simply by turning a dial located below the left side of the seat.
Every effort has been made to keep the cnter of gravity low on this machine. For instance, the Ulysses Police motorcycle features a 4.4-gallon fuel reservoir integrated into the aluminum frame. The lower center of mass achieved by carrying fuel in the frame, rather than in a tank located high on top of the frame, enhances rider confidence on and off road. The muffler is located below the power unit to further lower the center of gravity and also centralizes mass for improved handling in all situations. Low unsprung weight helps keep the tires in contact with uneven road surfaces for improved control. The 17-inch, six-spoke, reinforced cast-aluminum wheels incorporate a durable rim design. Finally, the Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires deliver good traction on paved and unpaved roads.
A nice little touch is the dual front fender system which provides improved debris protection for both the rider and the bike.

The Ulysses Police will be offered in two color choices: Birch White and Midnight Black.

*Based on tests conducted under laboratory  conditionsin accordance with  U.S. EPA test procedures. Mileage will vary depending on personal riding habits, weather conditions, trip length, vehicle condition, and whatever the bad guy you are chasing is travelling in...
